Gate padlocked, unable to access public toilets at Numbei market, Oé-Cusse

Oé-Cusse, 11 April 2024 (TVDJ) – People who trade at Numbei Market, Costa Tribe, Pante-Macassar, Oé-Cusse, Ambeno (Raeoa), question the existence of public toilets at Numbei Market which has been already ramp up since 2023 until now not yet open to use.

According to Luisa Saet, as a trader she feels sad because for years the market has not had a public toilet that can be used for daily needs.

“I have been selling here for eight years, but there are no toilets here so people cannot use them for their daily needs. It’s so sad, when I need it for natural needs, I have to run and ask for neighbor’s bathroom or I’ll just squat in the grass.” Said by the merchant.

She added, last year the government started building public toilets in this market, but we don’t know why until now this toilets have not been opened to the public.

On the other hand, Domingas Elu, as a buyer, said that toilets are the most important thing for all traders in this market, and also for buyers who buy things at this market so that they can be used for their needs.

“I can say, it is very difficult when this market does not have toilets because when we are in an urgent situation we have to run and look for a place to answer our needs, if the place is not safe then we have to hold it until we return home, and I am sure we will get sick because of this.” Domingas said

She added that the parties involved, including the management of the Numbei market itself, should immediately find a solution to answer the concerns of the community, especially traders in this market.

To answer these concerns, the management of the Numbei market stated that for toilets, we had built them last year so that this market has toilets, and has complete facilities such as electricity and water, but it is still not open to the public because we still don’t have security guards and cleaners to clean toilets when people use them.

“I can open it to the public, but there are still no security officers or cleaning staff who can guard the toilet. Therefore, we cannot open it for people to use, because it really requires safety and cleanliness to clean it so that it doesn’t have a bad impact on the people living nearby.” Said Fernando Sousa Reckless

He added, asking the 9th government to place security guards and cleaners to work in this place so that they can guard all the facilities, including when people use the toilet.

According to TVDJ journalists’ observations, the toilet built at Numbei Market is surrounded by a fence, has two rooms and consists of three toilets, but the gate was padlocked, and is now used as a field.
