Dili, 01 July 2024 (Média Democracia) – The Civil Protection Authority (APC), in June 2024, from 23 to 29 recorded cases of natural events in Baucau, Ermera and Aileu, including house fires, storms and earthquakes.

According to the Head of External Relations, Nelson Nunes de Orleans, today the weekly report from 23 to 29 June 2024 was presented, this week there were natural disasters in the Timor-Leste region collected by CNOPC.

“The data collected in Greek on the three natural disasters such as house fires, storms and earthquakes, have five figures of damage, excluding the three categories with a total of 34 people affected especially in Municipalities such as Aileu there was one house burned, in Baucau the storm destroyed one house and two houses burned and in Ermera one house burned and three houses damaged by the earthquake, today I am here to present four municipalities according to the data from Greece, therefore asking the municipalities and partners to provide emergency life to the affected families and provide food for the victims.” Nelson said in a press conference

He added that detailed data presented starting from 21, 23, 24, 25 June 2024 from Ermera, Hatulia B Administrative Post, Urahou Tribe, Caitur Loa Sub-Village, there was an earthquake that destroyed three houses in the Fatubolu Tribe, Fatubolu Sub-Village, there was one house that burned down on 21 June 2024.

“On June 24, 2024, a natural disaster occurred in Aileu, Aileu-Villa, Liurai tribe, Rairema sub-village, one house burned down resulting one person suffering minor burns. On June 25, in Baucau, Quelicai Post-administration, Baguia tribe, Laua sub-village one house burned down. On June 23 in Makalaku tribe, Puci-Lau sub-village there was a storm that damaged one sacred house of the community, this incident only received emergency assistance.” Nelson said

When a natural disaster occurs, victims immediately get data from the sub-village, the team immediately goes to the scene and evacuates victims to a safe place away from vulnerable areas. This house fire did not result in fatalities, but one person suffered minor burns.

The section head emphasized that from January to June 2024, the Civil Protection Authority (APC) had registered natural disaster cases with the number registered reaching more than 1000.

“What type or category this natural disaster belongs to is not yet known because it is still verifying the data and the APC is still collecting data, so they cannot yet identify the type of damage to the victims’ houses,” said the Section head.

Therefore, the emergency response team took initial steps based on the processes and systems owned by the APC, first verifying the data, to find out the victim’s situation based on the three types of damage that existed, then providing emergency response support according to the type of houses that was damaged.
